Next week I will be at WonderCon in San Francisco. If you happen to be attending, come by the Megamoth Studio table in the Artist Alley and say "Hello." The table will be devoted to Megamoth Studio so it will be pretty awesome. I may have a small quantity of my own work there as well.

Being at WonderCon may limit my ability to update this site next week, and I am sorry if it happens that way. If there is no update next week, I will have something extra nice for you the week after. Deal?

I just finished reading "Cowboy Feng's Spacebar and Grille" by Steven Brust. As you may have heard, I really like Brust's novels. Even the one about the vampire. Cowboy Feng's was sadly not a big winner for me. Brust's writing is charming and a pleasure to read, but I found I had trouble caring for the characters. The idea of a restaurant getting bounced around through space and time by repeated nuclear bomb detonations is certainly amusing, and the reasons for everything as revealed in the end are thoughtful and interesting. I just had trouble telling the characters apart, which made it very difficult to care about developments in their lives.

Now I should be getting back to convention preparations. Please note, there is a new print in the gallery. You will enjoy it.

Some weeks end up being more about planning and organization than anything else. This week was one of those weeks. The Megamoth Studio 2011 Anthology has finally been ordered. We should receive a shipment of books in a little less than 2 weeks. This is a good thing, considering the speed with which WonderCon is approaching. There is still a mighty list of things that need to finished or arranged for the upcoming season so time for drawing is more scarce than I would like. There is a deep satisfaction in finishing the anthology, teaching and making plans for the future.

Some people worry about the future. I suppose I worry too, from time to time. On the other hand, I have a certain knowledge - the future will be good. Bad things may happen, but the future is always bright. Good things are on the way.

Newer art will have to remain "on the way" for a little bit longer. I hope you will be satisfied by the addition of the entire Book of Holes to the gallery. Check out the link in the Books section or click below. Enjoy!

The Book of Holes

The images coming out of Japan are overwhelming. The magnitude of the disaster is stunning and the images of buildings quivering and entire neighborhoods burning or being swallowed by the ocean have an incredibly humbling effect. We are only small creatures after all.

Adversity on the scale of what Japan is currently faced with is rare in human experience, but it is far from unique. Haiti, Louisiana and Indonesia are just a few of the places that have faced similar devastation in recent years.

Being what we are, there are really only two major choices when something like this happens. You can either be swept away by the forces beyond your control, or you can get back up and build again. This is the basic choice we all face when confronted with adversity, no matter the scale. The human capacity continue moving forward is one of the most inspiring and humbling lessons to be learned from an event like this. In the world there are people who have had their entire world shaken to its foundation. They need help. In every place struck by disaster, whether caused by natural events or by humanity itself, aid is needed and welcome. The striking thing is that in every case, people will keep going.

The human spirit is truly amazing.

I have been reading ancient legends about Cuchulainn. Ancient Irish hero sagas may have just taken the lead in the race for weirdest stories I have ever read. I am really enjoying them, but they have some very strange and fantastic stuff. Highlights include a baby screaming from inside the womb, and a years long battle between pig-keeper wizards, and I've only just started. I am a happy man.

Last week's efforts to put together the 2011 Anthology for Megamoth Studio appear to have been a success. The proof should arrive by Tuesday. I expect it will be beautiful and there will be much rejoicing.

Another subject of imminent rejoicing is the completion of the next installment of Otherkinds. Emily Martin is now penciling the last pages, so we should have a new book done soon. It is going to be good.

So many people around me are getting so much done this Spring. I guess it is time to shift into a higher gear on my own work.
