Welcome to my page on printmaking! My name is Brett Grunig and I have been making traditional prints since the year 2000. I developed the information on this page to support my teaching at Santa Rosa Junior College. After some years of hosting all of this material on the SRJC online teaching system, I decided it's time to host it on my own site. This information is designed for use by my students at the college, but will hopefully also be useful as a reference to other printmakers.
Etching and intaglio printmaking is a process for making reproducible images that goes back to the 15th century. Intaglio means “to incise,” and covers a variety of techniques for making a plate which includes etching, which uses acid to make a plate. Etching and intaglio has a rich history and a wide array of exciting and technically demanding techniques to explore. While technology continues to develop new ways of creating repeatable of images, there are unique qualities to the physical nature and techniques of etching and intaglio that continue to give it a place in contemporary work.
I am organizing the information in several categories - general shop information and by specific disciplines or techniques. Take a look around and, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at bgrunig@santarosa.edu.
