Did everyone have a good Free Comic Book Day? I sure did. It was really great to see so many young kids excited about reading comic books. Super fun!

Speaking of free comics, most webcomics are free. I would like to introduce a couple pf relatively new ones. I am particularly proud to present these because they are the work of students at Megamoth Studio. Ashley Lancaster has a couple of comics she has been uploading to Smack Jeeves for a a short while now, Hippies, a story about a werewolf and a vampire looking for a roommate too keep their sweet pad, and Host, the story of a young man trying to make it through high school while possessed by a parasitic demon. Ashley’s work just gets better and better so check it out. We also have a webcomic being produced by Emily Barber called Wells. Wells is just getting started, but you should check it out all the same, because it’s going to get good. I know because I’ve seen the pages and story in progress. There are days when it is a great thing to be a teacher.

My own creative practice is still running hard in different directions, but some things are starting to get done. Check out this sweet watercolor!

It would seem the last couple of weeks got away from me. I suppose it is only to be expected when you have several large project deadlines landing at the same time. The good news is that the Megamoth Studio Anthology 2013 is nearly ready to go to print, the test proof of the children’s book I have been working on is being reviewed by the author and her editor, coloring on Princeless volume 2 issue 4 is well under way, the script for a comic short I have been planning for nearly a year is nearly ready and I do have editioned prints waiting for titles and signatures stacked on my desk beside me.

Seeing how the prints have not been titled yet, I have only a quick pencil drawing for you this week. Bearded men in hats are inevitable after seeing the Rembrandt’s Century show at the DeYoung.

I’ve been watching the first season of Game of Thrones. It’s interesting to see the formula of an endless litany of really horrible things happening the few decent people in a story get translated into a fantasy television show. I like to think the plot of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy is just a really long one in terms of development and that there will be a great deal of satisfaction and much smiting of evil by the end of it. I’ve read the first two books so I know there’s not going to be much hope of that sort of thing, at least for a long, long time.

I’ve been through this before. I have put books down and abandoned television shows over it in the past. HBO is particularly good at creating shows I just don’t want to watch due to a lack of heroic victory. I suppose it’s not really a new thing in television. I grew up watching mostly episodic shows where a conflict is resolved by the end of the episode and the good guys usually win, but there have been soap operas for longer than I have been alive. Given the train wrecks that soap opera characters call their lives week after week, I am forced to admit the wanton tormenting of characters for the long haul is s pretty old hat after all.

I will admit to having my doubts about whether to continue reading Martin’s books. I enjoyed reading them, but I don’t want to get stuck waiting anxiously for the next book, particularly given Martin’s current rate of production. Fortunately, I have an ample supply of other reading and I can wait to see if Martin ever finishes the story before picking it up again.

In other news, I have a new print for you. There are now links in the gallery to purchase this, and the last two prints in the gallery captions for each of them. Or you can click here, here or here.

I was finally able to see some of Rembrandt’s drawings and prints in person yesterday. It was incredible.

I have seen his drawings and prints in books many times. Dover even publishes a book that reproduces all of Rembrandt’s prints at their real sizes and I have studied my copy closely indeed. It was still incredible to see the prints in real life. Intaglio prints are meant to be seen in person. There are certainly works of art that are best viewed through digital reproduction or as films or photographs in books, but the physical experience of looking at a print is truly the best way to experience a print.
